Ganglion cysts are commonly found on the hands and the feet.  They are sometimes painful and sometimes asymptomatic.  The cysts originate generally either from a joint or a tendon and contain a fluid that looks a lot like hair gel clinically.  The fluid itself typically comes from either joint fluid or tendon fluid called synovial fluid that leaks into an area where it is not meant to be.

In previous generations, people would try to hit them with the Bible or another large book in the house to try to "explode" the cyst to make it go away.  Treament we typically perform today includes trying to drain the cyst if it is painful.  If it returns after being drained, surgically removal of ganglion cyst is another treatment option.  Bumps that develop on your feet and ankles are not normal, and if you think you may be developing this, call our foot and ankle specialist at 719-488-4664, so we can help you!
